Larches Lodge is a real Norwegian log cabin, set in a larch copse in the one-acre gardens of our family home. It is perched on the hillside, looking over Church Stretton, the market town often nicknamed Little Switzerland.

Light the Salamander stove, and the logs are on us. The town is an easy ten-minute stroll away, and the Long Mynd, Caer Caradoc and Carding Mill Valley are all a stone’s throw away, with walks for both the less energetic and more experienced.

The view from the balcony

A decked balcony runs along the side of the cabin, in among the larches, with furniture to sit out on and views over Church Stretton. Parking is on the lower driveway, and a 40-metre gravel path brings you to the lodge. Arrival is generally after 3pm and departure by 10.30am, with sometimes some flexibility if you ask.

Good to know before you book

  • The lodge is close to our family home, separated by a wall and hedging. If total quiet matters most, Oaks Lodge is further away.
  • The hot tub pump can make a little noise during the night. The jets are gentler than a jacuzzi’s.
  • Sleeps two adults. No pets, because there are cats and chickens on site.
  • Hot tub closes by 10.30pm, with a maximum of three hours’ use a day.
  • Cigarettes outdoors only, and strictly no weed anywhere on the site.
