Woodland Stays

Questions

If yours isn’t here, Mark is on 07967 226501.

Where are you?

In Church Stretton, in the Shropshire Hills AONB, around 11 miles south of Shrewsbury. We are about an 8-minute walk from the station on the Manchester to Newport line, and just off the A49. By road, the M54 reaches us from the West Midlands via the A5, and the M56 from the North West via Chester and the A5.

Is there parking?

Yes. There is private parking for one car per lodge in a dedicated area on our property, at the end of a 50-metre private drive off Watling Street South. It is a little steep, though relatively easily managed.

What time is check-in and check-out?

Check-in is guaranteed from 3pm, and if you message on the day we are typically ready from 1.30pm. Check-out is by 10.30am. We live on site, so you are welcome to arrive later in the evening and we will show you to your lodge.

Are the lodges private?

Oaks Lodge stands in its own third of an acre of private woodland. There are neighbouring properties, but at some distance and well screened by trees. The outlook from Larches Lodge is private too, though it is closer to our house on one side, separated by a wall and hedging, with a sail screen over the hot tub.

How far is it into Church Stretton?

Around an 11-minute walk. A footpath halfway along Watling Street crosses the A49, passes a grey industrial building, goes over the railway bridge and along Central Avenue, and comes out by the Co-op. Carry on and it runs alongside the beer garden of The Kings Arms.

Are there pubs and restaurants in town?

Plenty. The pubs include The Kings Arms, The Bucks Head, Housemans, The Old Bike Shop and The Old Coppers Malthouse. The Jaipur Indian restaurant is very popular, as is Sawaddee Thai, and there are many cafes.

How challenging are the walks?

The Long Mynd rises to 516m at Pole Bank. Townbrook Valley climbs steadily, Mott’s Road goes through Carding Mill Valley and along the Shropshire Way, and the Hundred Steps and the face of Ashlet are the steep way up. Caer Caradoc, Helmeth Wood and Hope Bowdler Hill have gorgeous views. Ragleth Hill has a steep descent to The Green Dragon or the Ragleth Inn in Little Stretton, and the valleys rising from All Stretton are less crowded than Carding Mill.

Do you offer one-night stays?

The minimum at weekends is typically two nights. If there is a one-night gap in the calendar we can consider it, though that’s rare at weekends, the price is higher because of the changeover, and check-in and check-out times make it a shorter stay than it sounds.

Can I bring a dog?

Sorry, no pets, because we have cats and chickens on site. Each lodge sleeps two.

How do I pay if I book direct?

By bank transfer to our UK business account. We don’t use agents. Please never pay for dates that aren’t showing as available on the calendars.
